Matrix or Centre Weighted metering?

I have been reading a book (Flash Photography by Barry Staver) that states that the camera must be set to centre weighted or partial metering (what's that?) and never Matrix Metering. Other sites on the internet say that it must be Matrix Metering. I was confused enough before but now have no idea what to do now. Any help?
